Dr. Shunmuga Sundaram is an Interventional Cardiologist and Electrophysiology Specialist based in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He currently practises at the Velamma Medical College and Hospital

Besides an MBBS and MD in Internal Medicine as his initial medical degrees, Dr. Sundaram obtained the DM (Cardiology) superspeciality degree from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) in Thiruvananthapuram. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology from SCTIMST, and later underwent advanced training in the same subject at St. Luke's Medical Centre in Milwaukee, USA. An outstanding student, he received several certificates of merit and other awards during his medical studies and early professional career. After completing his fellowship courses from prestigeous Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute (kerala) and St Luke's Medical centre (USA) he started practising as an interventional cardiologist and electrophysiologist in Madurai. He has done more than 1500 angioplasties in the last 3 years, which includes chronic total occlusions, bifurcation stenting and left main interventions. He has done more than 750 radiofrequency ablations for cardiac rhythm disorders in the city. Few of these arrhythmias were complex which required 3 dimensional mapping of the heart, pediatric patients (youngest being 2 years) and gediatric patients (oldest being 96 years). He is the first cardiologist to do Ventricular tachycardia ablation in south Tamilnadu. He is also the first person to do 3 dimension guided ablation for complex cardiac arrhythmias in south Tamilnadu. He has also got special interest in doing HIS bundle pacing which is a novel technique for pacemaker implanatation (physiological pacing)

Dr. Shunmuga Sundaram has worked on numerous research-based articles and papers, many of which have been published in peer-reviewed journals or presented as posters or podium presentations at medical conferences in India and overseas. Besides English, he is fluent in Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam.
